From the May 1 issue

The Promise of Phage Display: Customized Affinity and Specificity Virus particles, called phage, can be genetically engineered to manufacture and display various compounds on their surfaces. When large collections of phage are modified in this way, libraries of >1010 compounds can be produced and screened. Gregory A. Weiss and Reginald M. Penner of the University of California Irvine describe how this "phage display" machinery can be applied to sensors for analytes from Salmonella typhimurium to TNT.
