POSITION SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Analytical Chemist will be to support applications and solutions development utilizing ASD’s advanced NIR technology for a variety of evolving markets. This position reports to the VP of Sales.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Applications Chemist will also:
• Assist in creating and maintaining calibration datasets (libraries) for various industrial markets.
• Work directly with the sales organization to provide feasibility testing of potential new NIR applications with consideration of the total solution that may be required to enable customer success
• Provide technical support and assistance to the sales organization to enable product sales.
• Provide NIR chemometric support and technical support for chemometric applications with ASD Inc. internal and external customers.
• Work with cross-functional groups on dynamic project teams.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry
• 3 – 4 years experience using analytical chemistry in an Industrial environment

REQUIREMENTS
• Excellent written, presentation, speaking and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work as part of a group with applications support, technical support, sales staff and distributors.
• Some Travel required – nationally & internationally
• Industrial experience preferred

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with NIR instrumentation
• NIR Chemometric model development
• NIR Chemometric model maintenance
• Understanding of analytical chemistry as it applies to routine testing. In particular commonly used analytic instrumentation utilized for routine testing, such as HPLC, GC, NMR, IR.
• Solutions-based focus, ideally would have demonstrated capabilities for application of new technology.
• Demonstrated ability to apply or gain acceptance of new technology

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Section Supervisor, Applied Chemistry.



Required:

PhD in chemistry (analytical preferred) with a minimum of 10 years experience working with modern chemical analytical laboratory operations. Must have extensive expertise on the appropriate application of modern analytical equipment, such as Capillary Electrophoresis, Raman Spectroscopy, GC/MS, ICP/OES or ICP/MS, NMR, FTIR, and HPLC for the solution of chemical and materials problems. Working knowledge of synthetic chemistry. Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills, leadership skills, and the ability to guide technical teams in achievement of project goals.


Desired:

Familiarity with laboratory applications supporting the test instruments indicated. A strong and respected technical reputation in the APL customer community. Demonstrated experience and knowledge across analytical, physical, synthetic, and biological applications. Working knowledge of laser spectroscopy. Experience in writing proposals to procure government sponsored contracts and grants. Experience in Molecular Imprinted Polymer chemistry.


Supervise the staff of the Applied Chemistry Section and provide hands-on analytical services to support the Laboratory's chemical analysis needs. Maintain laboratory facilities, develop staff capabilities, and assist customers in business development opportunities. Manage the Section's service delivery to ensure quality and value to its customers. Provide the technical leadership and vision required to keep the section's expertise and technical capabilities aligned with evolving technical needs of core APL programs and current with advances in the external environment. Develop business for the section by working with business area program and technical leads to secure sponsor funding. Manage service delivery in response to direct tasking requirements by setting work priorities, assigning appropriate staffing and technical resources, tracking work status, and maintaining communication between staff, management, and customers. Ensure that customer schedule, technical, and quality requirements are met. Conduct hands-on technical work in support of APL programs and technical development initiatives. Prepare reports and memos documenting technical findings. Stay current on the state-of-the-art in relevant technologies. Manage and develop staff resources to support the section's service roles, including conducting performance reviews, hiring new staff, and encouraging continuing education and training for professional development. Position Description:


• Join a small group within a global, publicly traded company to conceive, design, build and evaluate prototypes of new spectroscopic detectors for liquid chromatography. Performance to fully exploit available components given the constraints of analytical sample size and speed of analysis.
• The majority of projects will involve UV-visible absorbance or fluorescence measurement.
• Projects include evolving generations of existing client products plus new technical approaches with commercial potential.
• Primary responsibility will be for optical and mechanical design of the detector and sample interface, collaborating as necessary with development engineers from other groups to build fully functional prototypes.
• Leverage effectiveness through collaborations with university or other research groups and vendor collaborations to develop key components with improved capability.
• Take responsibility to develop a common new product agenda with marketing and the development engineering team.
• Take responsibility for technology transfer to the development engineering team and ensure that performance specifications are maintained through product development, manufacturing and commercial release.
• Good writing and communication skills are required.
• Some supervisory experience is desirable.


Specific areas of expertise:
• Photodiode arrays, photomultipliers, CCD's, gratings, aspheric mirrors, broad band light sources, lasers, optical fibers.
• Optical design for high throughput, optical design software.
• The control of excess noise.
• General awareness of signal processing techniques and interplay between software/firmware and instrument functionality.
• Be generally knowledgeable in aspects of opto-mechanical interfacing to samples at the micro-scale. Flowing samples in aqueous or organic solution have analytical volumes ranging from L uL to nL.
Education:
• PhD, plus 5-10 years additional research experience. Physical/analytical chemistry/biochemistry, physics, optical spectroscopy, spectroscopic instrument design and construction.

Qualifications. M.S. and a minimum of 5 years experience in mass spectrometry. Ph. D. is preferred. Candidate should be familiar with the theory, applications, and operation of a variety of mass spectrometric techniques including MADLI-TOF, magnetic sector and LC-ESI instruments. Excellent administrative and communication skills are desired. Collaborative research and professional development are strongly encouraged.
